The Block
Asheville’s historic neighborhood where Black businesses once thrived is experiencing a revitalization thanks to local efforts made by current residents, including individuals whose families lived in The Block during its heyday and institutions that never left, such as the YMI Cultural Center — founded in 1893. All around The Foundry Hotel are glimmers of a bustling community that survived the Great Depression and boasted juke joints that hosted the likes of Louis Armstrong in the 1950s. Though suburbanization destroyed much of The Block in the 1980s, its rich history and deep cultural roots proved resilient, making the neighborhood a must-visit spot for anyone traveling through the city with an interest in history, dining, art galleries, shopping, and more.
